Brett did not start as a token. He started as a hand-drawn character in a stapled zine made by an art-school kid in Ohio. This is how he got from there to the Solana blockchain.
Illustrator Matt Furie, fresh out of art school in Ohio, self-publishes a black-and-white zine called Boy's Club. Inside: four anthropomorphic roommates living in post-college limbo — Pepe the frog, Andy the bug-eyed cat, Landwolf the manic werewolf, and Brett, the chubby blue bear. The zine is photocopied, hand-stapled, sold for a few dollars at indie comic shops.

Furie keeps making Boy's Club issues. The four characters drift through bong rips, bowls of cereal, late-night TV and minor existential crises. Brett is the chill one — calm, friendly, often the voice of reason against Pepe's mischief. The zine becomes a quiet cult favorite among indie comic readers and skaters.

A panel of Pepe pulling his pants all the way up while peeing — captioned 'Feels good, man' — is scanned and posted on 4chan. It explodes. Pepe escapes the comic and becomes the most remixed character of the 2010s. Brett, Andy and Landwolf stay in the zine — close friends of a character who has now eaten the internet.
After Pepe is hijacked by political extremists, Matt Furie publicly mourns and 'kills' Pepe in a Boy's Club spinoff strip. He launches legal and creative campaigns to reclaim his work. The Boy's Club universe — Brett included — becomes a touchstone for fans who remember the gentler, sillier roots of the meme.
On Base, an anonymous community launches a token simply named BRETT — a tribute to the blue bear. Within weeks it becomes one of the largest meme tokens of the cycle. Brett's wide pink smile is everywhere: profile pics, billboards, hoodies. The cult character of a 2005 zine is suddenly a billion-dollar mascot.
This is the next chapter. $BRETT lands on Solana — fast, cheap, community-owned — carrying the same energy: indie roots, bright colors, friendship, and the refusal to take itself too seriously. No roadmap, no promises. Just Brett, the blue bear, on the fastest chain in crypto.
